A beautiful home. A loving wife. And in-laws to die for.

Gemma Robinson comes into Elliot’s life like a whirlwind, and they marry and settle into his home. When she asks him if her parents can come to stay for a couple of weeks, he is keen to oblige – he just doesn’t quite know what he’s signing up for.

The Robinsons arrive with Gemma’s sister, Chloe, a mysterious young woman who refuses to speak or leave her room. Elliot starts to suspect that the Robinsons are hiding a dark secret. And then there are the scars on his wife’s body that she won’t talk about . . .

As Elliot’s in-laws become more comfortable in his home, encroaching on all aspects of his life, it becomes clear that they have no intention of moving out. To protect Gemma, and their marriage, Elliot delves into the Robinsons’ past. But is he prepared for the truth?

My Review

Elliot has an almost perfect life. He is happy in a career which has led to him running a successful business teaching science to underprivileged children, and content to come home to just his cat Charlie in the house that he worked hard to lovingly restore.
Then along comes Gemma who visits Elliot's house on an open garden's weekend, and the two fall head over heels in love with each other and marry within two months. Gemma's parents, Jeff and Lizzie come to stay for two weeks along with Gemma's strange sister Chloe. Elliot who was orphaned after his parent's died in a tragic accident, was more than happy to become part of a family again and naturally welcomed them. However, it soon became apparent that this was the family from hell who had no intentions of leaving. Jeff was physically a big man and a force to be reckoned with, and Elliot who was non-violent by nature was soon to go out of his mind.
Having your home taken over by people who have no respect for you or your property would be most people's worst nightmare.
Written in the first person as Elliot, in the three days it took me to read this I had become Elliot, taking on his stress, fear and anger. The master of psychological thrillers, Mark Edwards who wrote 'The Magpies' has excelled himself with 'Here to Stay.' If I had to choose one word to describe this book it would be Nightmare, which in psychological thriller terms is meant in a good way.
